Why I Left Facebook for Substack—and Found More Peace, Purpose, and Joy
Tired of the noise and negativity, I followed God’s lead to a quieter space where faith, encouragement, and genuine connection thrive.
For way too long, Christians have been hiding their light under a basket—especially online.
We’ve tiptoed around the truth because we didn’t want to offend. We’ve avoided speaking up because we didn’t want to sound too “religious.” And let’s be honest—we’ve worried more about being liked than being light.
But God didn’t call us to play it safe.
He called us to be salt and light.
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” —Matthew 5:14
For me, that call took an interesting twist on Facebook.
What started as a simple nudge to post a daily scripture turned into a habit. One morning, I read a verse that blessed me. I snapped a photo of it, posted it, and went about my day.
The next morning, I did it again.
Before long, it became part of my routine—something God and I did together. A little moment of obedience that turned into a ministry I never planned.
I’ll never forget the day someone walked into Johnny’s Bar & Grill—the business I ran for over 22 years- and said, "I love your morning scriptures. They’ve really helped me.”
I nearly fell over.
“You read those?” I asked, stunned.
They smiled. “Every day.”
That moment lit something inside me. I realized I was making a difference—right there behind the bar, just by being faithful in the little things.
Soon after, my Christian coach Sean Buckley encouraged me to start a Facebook group. That’s how Love Notes from the Lord was born.
It’s grown to nearly 900 members. Every morning, I show up there with Scripture, encouragement, and a heart ready to share. It’s been a gift—both to me and, I hope, to everyone who reads my posts.
A couple of years ago, I felt God calling me into something new. Actually, I was nudged to revisit a platform I’d dabbled with, but hadn’t taken seriously.
I’d been writing on Medium on and off, but I didn’t take it seriously until I met my incredible tutor, Kristina God. With her help, I topped a thousand followers and even made a few bucks. It wasn’t much—but it was deeply fulfilling. I was getting paid to write what was on my heart.
It was Kristina who introduced me to Substack—and I’m so grateful she did.
I spent years writing for my blog, which helped promote my book, but I never found a large audience. Most of my traffic came from Facebook. But Facebook isn’t the fun place it used to be.
They started pulling down posts—even scripture verses—for violating their “policies.” They overstepped their bounds and even influenced the election. The ruler of social media became a dictator, and I no longer enjoyed my morning scroll to catch up with my friends.
Now I scroll through Substack Notes, and I’m over the moon about the wonderful community here.
No drama.
No shouting matches in the comments.
Just people genuinely hungry for truth, connection, and encouragement.
It’s quieter here.
And deeper.
And kinder.
On Substack, I’m not competing with chaos. I can write from the heart, share Scripture, tell stories, and trust that the people reading are actually listening. Really listening.
I recently passed 150 subscribers, and I’m so grateful to each of you.
When someone signs up to read RV Living with Jesus at the Wheel, it’s like you’re inviting me into your home—and I’m honored. Your time is a valuable gift.
Right now, I’m not even earning enough for a cup of coffee. I have one paid subscriber (bless you!), and she supports me because my words speak to her heart.
I don’t know exactly where God is taking this publication.
But I believe He has big plans. And I’m so glad you’re along for the ride.
PS – I’m not done with Facebook.
I still post in Love Notes from the Lord and share devotions and updates on what we’re doing on my personal page. I’m helping the Roving Volunteers in Christ’s Service get their new page up and running. The platform still has a huge reach, and volunteers are needed. God can use any platform He chooses—and He has.
But this is where I’ll be showing up more and more. Right here. It’s home.
We’re living in uncertain times. For some, it’s frightening. But it’s also exciting—because this is when the light shines brightest.
So if you’re a Christian—whether you're posting on Facebook, texting a friend, or writing on a platform like this—remember this:
It’s our job to shine.
We don’t need to be perfect.
We just need to be present.
We don’t need a platform.
We just need to be faithful.
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” —1 Peter 3:15
I’m thrilled to keep writing here.
I’ll keep showing up in your inbox with truth, joy, and reminders that God is on the move.
I’ll keep smiling at strangers, posting Scriptures, and sharing the reason for my optimism.
And I hope you’ll do the same, wherever God calls you to speak up.
Because the world doesn’t just need louder voices.
It needs brighter ones.
