How Does Stepping Away from the Nomad Life Feel? (Blessings Abound)
Putting down roots after almost four years of travel feels good.
We’ve been in the RVICS Village for over a month, and it feels fantastic! It’s impossible to describe how awesome this community of believers is. We have the privilege of being the young kids on the block. It’s incredible how active people here are in their 80s and 90s. We aspire to be like them.
We enjoy the morning devotionals, the potluck get-togethers, and the fantastic local Mexican restaurant. Tommy’s made quite a few visits to the local lumber yard.
We’re beginning to make our site a homey and tranquil place to stay. It’s been too hot to do too much physical labor. However, Tommy has submitted the plans for our sunroom extension for the shed, which have been approved. We got our base rock delivered yesterday for our motorhome parking area, and it’s more beautiful than I imagined. I expected dull gray, but what was delivered was much more attractive.

Waiting for the delivery was a bit stressful for Tommy. The load was supposed to be here at 9:00 a.m. That was changed to 11:00, then 1:00, and when it showed up at 2:30, we didn’t know it was here until we received calls from our neighbors. We are parked in the visitor’s area close to the front office. Tommy was waiting to hear from the man bringing the rock, but he never called.

As soon as word was out that the delivery was here, neighbors arrived at our site to help out, bringing shovels and rakes. Within 30 minutes, the trailer full of rock was in the driveway, and some was poured into the area where our sunroom is going. With the weed cloth below it, we should never have to worry about plant growth underneath it.

Today, we head out on a volunteer assignment to the Camp of the Hills in Marble Falls, Texas. It’s less than 100 miles from Smithville, which is excellent. There will only be five of us on the project. RVICS needs more volunteers. Many folks here cannot get out and work anymore, but they still walk around the village. I look at them and hope I’m still trucking like they are at 95.
If you are a retiree who wants to do something productive and helpful in your senior years, I hope you’ll consider RVICS. It’s such a fantastic organization. We are all Christ followers who are answering the call to give back in a way that blesses us as much as the camps we are helping.
I look forward to sharing the Camp of the Hills experiences with you. We have a small crew, but I’m sure we will be mighty. If you haven’t read my stories about the RVICS volunteer experience, I hope you’ll check out some of my posts. We never know what to expect, and it’s never dull.
