Did You Know It’s National Kiss a Ginger Day? (This Redheads Feeling the Love)
It’s been a wonderful week at the RVICS Village!
We are blessed to be a part of an RVICS assignment, making improvements to the place we now call home. Projects usually last three weeks, but this one will be slightly different. We started a week early to get the office painted before the new members team rolled in. Our hambone Stan, Village Vice President, and his lovely wife Cindi are stepping down from their positions. I can’t imagine not listening to Stan’s silly jokes at our weekly InTouch meetings.
Stan and Cindi are the leaders of the Village assignment. Getting the office painted before the new VP arrived made sense. Many file cabinets needed to be painted, which meant moving massive amounts of files out of them to relocate them to the shop. While the ladies painted all the edgings in the office the first day, the men spray-painted file cabinets and sanded down some furniture for a fresh coat of white paint.

The photos we pulled off the bathroom wall took much of the sheetrock off with them. While I was cutting in at the ceiling, Stan came in and sanded down the areas that needed repair. I heard him telling our president, Mellisa, she could put a large picture over the mess instead of going to all that work. He looked at me after sanding a bit, told me I could paint the spots, and walked out the door. I got right on it and hit it with my paintbrush.

When he returned with a fresh piece of sandpaper, he was shocked to find out I’d already slapped some paint over the area where he was sanding. “You painted it,” he yelped! “You told me to,” I responded. “I was just kidding!” he said. Don’t tell this redhead to do a job and not expect it to be done immediately. I don’t think he’ll make that kind of joke with me anymore. 😂🤣
We finished most of the cutting on the first day, and Tommy, my painter husband, came in the next day to roll all the walls. Mellisa, Cindi, and I remained in the office painting while the other ladies went to paint furniture in the shop. I was different working alongside our husbands. The men and the gals usually do various jobs on the projects and seldom find ourselves working in the same area.

It was fun to work together. When I’d done all I could in the office on our last day, I headed over to the shop to see how the rest of the crew was doing. It was Beverly who started the fun idea of taking kissing pictures. She and John were painting together, and she said, “Hey, Cat, this is how we get it done out here.” After getting their photo, I had Sandy and Bill pose for me, too. Some team members were at doctor’s appointments, so I don’t have pictures of everyone yet. You know I will before the project is over.

We finished painting the office, furniture, and cabinets and put the place back together in our first week. I haven’t taken pictures of the finished project. The men return to work after lunch daily, and everything wasn’t finalized when I left. I’ll be sure to share those photos next week. It’s been fun so far, and I’m sure I’ll have some more Stan stories before it’s all over. He is such a jokester.
We’re heading outside to paint next week, and the guys are making repairs to the social pavilion. I’m praying that it warms up. Painting in 40-degree weather is not something I look forward to. However it works out, I know we’ll have fun while getting the work done. That’s how RVICS rolls. If you want to give back in your retirement years, you can’t beat this amazing organization.
